It’s the end of the world as we know it (…do you feel fine)?

“It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” was a popular song penned by the band R.E.M. back in 1987. Since that time, there have been numerous “predictions” (or “prophecies”) by various prognosticators that the world would end on [such and such] date. – Oops, well, I guess not.

As we have heard, the latest “prediction” is that the world will end tomorrow, September 23, 2017. Could it be true?

The Bible is very clear on so many things, and prophecy is one of them. Heck, just look at the hundreds of Biblical prophecies about Jesus Christ that were spot on and were fulfilled by Jesus! Regarding the end times, or the end of the world, scripture is quite clear too.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 describes how in the last days “there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.

Mark 13:3-8 further clarifies what will happen in the last days. This passage states, “3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

So, have you noticed anyone in our world that fits the bill for what is described in 2 Timothy 3:1-5? What about nations rising up against nations? Wars, or rumors of war? Notice any earthquakes or famines lately? Basically, these things are going to happen, so we shouldn’t be surprised. They are the beginnings of the last days and the end of [this] world.

Yet, who knows WHEN all of this will end? Is it tomorrow? Maybe. But, Matthew 24:34-37 clearly points out that no one knows the date or time when the world will end. Siri doesn’t know. Alexa doesn’t know. The Russians might know, but they’re not telling.

SPOILER ALERT: NO ONE KNOWS…NOT EVEN JESUS CHRIST! Only God knows and He’s not ready to post anything to social media just yet!

However, lest anyone minimize the situation, the end of the world is coming, and it is coming fast!

The Apostle Peter in 2 Peter 3 (ESV) sums everything up quite well. Here Peter is reminding the church that the day of the Lord will come. Peter states, “1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Everyone will be living eternally, somewhere. And your eternity might come tomorrow, in ten years, or in the next two minutes. God only knows. Furthermore, your eternity will either be with God in heaven or apart from God in hell. That is the reality, whether you choose to believe it or not. But you do have a choice! And, if you are not 100% certain right now about your eternity, you can be. And, I pray that you will be! Look, eternity is a long time to be painfully wrong, so please don’t take this lightly!
